How long does a first million take without interest?
With no return, divide the amount still needed by your monthly contribution and round up to the next whole month. Starting at zero and saving SEK 5,000 a month takes 200 months, or 16 years and 8 months.
At SEK 10,000 a month, the same target takes 100 months: 8 years and 4 months without interest. Not every household has that capacity. Contributions should not be financed with consumer loans or unpaid essential bills.
Starting capital changes the amount still needed
If SEK 100,000 is already set aside for this goal, SEK 900,000 remains. Saving SEK 5,000 monthly with no return then takes 180 months, or 15 years. Do not include money actually needed for an emergency fund or planned spending.
Use net amounts. Borrowed-against assets and business money cannot always be treated as personal savings. Consider possible tax, sale costs and access restrictions before counting an amount as starting capital.
What does compound growth change?
If capital earns a positive return and that return stays invested, earlier returns can contribute to later growth. But interest rates change and investments can lose value. A steady calculator rate explores a scenario, not how markets move every month.
Our calculator uses an assumed annual return after tax and fees, with contributions at month-end. Inflation is excluded. Compare with zero percent to see how much depends on your own contributions and how much, in the example, depends on an assumed return.
Break the goal into smaller milestones
A million can feel remote. A smaller first milestone makes it easier to try a habit and see whether the budget works. For example, use SEK 10,000 as a first target, but decide whether that money is a buffer or part of the long-term goal.
With a larger balance, it is easy to confuse contributions and changes in market value. Record them separately. That helps you recognise the savings habit you have built even when investment values temporarily fall.
Make saving possible next month too
Automate an affordable contribution and leave room for surprises. Review larger recurring costs before spending all your energy on tiny expenses. If income or household needs change, the savings plan should be allowed to change too.
A first million is not just a number chosen in a calculator. It involves finding a financial routine you can maintain. The 100 guides offer different starting points, but none can promise that a particular contribution or timeline fits everyone.
Illustrative timelines without a return
